Character in a Time of Crisis
Written by Donald DeMarco, Ph.D.

"We welcome another fine piece of work by Dr. DeMarco. His wit shines through his solid philosophy and theology, and his talent for smooth writing carries the reader effortlessly along the direction of his thought.

Freedom to do as I will is fundamentally the crisis of our day. This is but a long developed inheritance from the 'freedom' from all restraint proclaimed by the Enlightenment ... The crisis of which Dr. DeMarco speaks in this marvelous book is precisely the chaos created by the void left behind by the Enlightenment's rejection of virtue and its source the grace of God ... The fall into chaos for our society is the but the necessary result of the chaos within individual human beings.

The freedom so craved today is achievable only when it is correctly understood and rightly pursued ... It means being free from internal and external coercion, free from the inner compulsion of addictions and outside factors forces me to do evil. I must be able to choose what is good, and I can know that good only when I seek truth. 'And the truth shall set you free' (Jn 8:3 2).

If St. John Chrysostom was right in claiming that 'so good a thing is virtue that even its enemies applaud and admire it,' then we believers dare not refuse to allow the truth and grace of virtue to rule our lives. Our enemies' salvation depends on seeing something they can admire without qualification; they need the example of strong characters built on uncompromising virtue; they need the example of love once again.

Please God, our youth will read this book and thus overcome the long history of 'brilliant errors' they study in academe and remedy the horrors of our 'enlightened' century."

"Eminently readable, quotable, bite-sized essay gems of wisdom."

"Character in a Time of Crisis is a valuable and rewarding book, full of refreshing insights on today's hotly disputed issues. With all the superficial talk about 'character' that now abounds, it is gratifying to find a writer who really understands the meaning of the word."
