Bioethics and Population: The Choice of Life
Written by Michel Schooyans
Translated by Fr. John H. Miller, C.S.C., S.T.D.

Fr. Schooyans, philosopher and theologian, is a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and retired professor of political philosophy, social morality and the ethics of demographic problems at the Catholic University of Louvain.

As He has written widely on these subjects, and this is his second book in English translation, the first being POWER OVER LIFE LEADS TO DOMINATION OF MANKIND published in 1996 by the Central Bureau. In this work he takes up all the typical questions raised by the pro-abortionists and responds with an acumen that is simply astounding. This is what the critics have to say about it.

"Legalized abortion in the United States is only one manifestation of a world-wide confrontation between the 'culture of death' and the 'culture of life.' Fr. Schooyans aptly labels this confrontation a 'war.' In this reader-friendly book he provides brief, comprehensive answers to questions on every aspect of this war. This book, soundly researched and plainly written, is a valuable resource for the scholar and yet provides a clear overview for thegeneral reader. It is indispensable for any who are serious about promoting the right to life in accord with the teaching of Christ."

– Charles E. Rice, J.S.D
Law School, Notre Dame University

"Take 146 pro-choice and anti-life loaded and leading questions; group them into 16 broad categories called 'chapters,' listing all in eight pages of contents; then answer all the questions in 100 pages of text -- and you get this book.

[It] answers all the tough questions pointedly, concisely and understandably. Pro-abortionists will hate this book to censorship. Whatever they say will be rebutted on another page. Amazing! Properly referenced, it is a debater's joy ... a cornucopia of insights important to anyone interested in 'life issues.'

Pleasure is identified as the contemporary 'superiority of Nazis,' wherein anything not pleasurable can be done away with. Recognized is the three-way equivalence of disposability, the liberal ideal and Nazism for the common people. Nazism proved people could be duped into doing anything and abortion confirms it. Only today it is Nazism with slick civility. One quickly realizes that with the attitudes of today's pro-aborts Nazism has won and not so secretly Schooyans points out that this is accomplished by 'the arithmetic of pleasure' making a 'juridical space for crime' resulting in a 'moral norm of convenience' -- three haunting phrases rendering Schooyans unforgettable. He makes clear the impact of all these anti-life policies: nations are being sterilized; sophistry has triumphed; the social morality is 'do not disturb me,' [And] the demographic collapse of Europe [which started it all is but the boomerang effect] of its programs for the poor. This is the new 'Right to Life Handbook.' It is books like this that maintain the soul of mankind."

– Samuel A. Nigro, M.D.
Psychiatrist in Cleveland, Ohio

"Professor Schooyans' book reminds me of the true impact man can have on his fellow man when dignity is recognized as an integral part of every human being rather than the current American definition which degrades and destroys the so-called "unwanted." This book is critically important for anyone who strives to live the Gospel of Life in a culture where the poor are despised. Every human being is our brother or our sister; this book gives
you the philosophy basic to this simple truth."
